Less facetiously... Suppose you're mediocre at something you have the following options: 1. Get good 2. Keep being mediocre at it 3. Stop doing the thing (2) rarely the right option unless thing is *essential*, so you probably mostly need to give yourself permission to do (3).

Seems like too much work. I'd rather just get good at the thing.

I'm talking about things you want to do. If you don't want to something why are you even trying?

It's actually quite hard to stay mediocre at things you want to do? Requires almost entirely dissociating from the experience in order to achieve that level of failing to learn from it.

i dunno, i think i do believe in natural aptitudes. it took me no effort to get good at cooking and baking, but despite a lot of effort i’m still a horrible gardener

Yeah, it's definitely *possible*, it's just not the norm. I don't think "natural talent" is a useful way of looking at it though. Normally you're just trying to do something in a way that doesn't work for you, or have failed to figure out some intuitive leap.

"Natural talent" might be a reasonable way to describe that but it suggests that the problem is more fixed than it is.
