i'm imagining people who are payed to read heidigger and lacan, be conversant in communtative algebra, and work with haskell, all for the purpose of slipping ideas into your water supply

I don't think "smart" is the problem here. I treat most people as smart, or at least able to teach me something, until proven otherwise. The problem is that most people who talk about these things are really annoying.
