How sure are you that it's "their friends" they won't accept it from and not you personally? I regularly find myself coming away from our interactions less rather than more on side with what you're saying.

Evaluating how they react to each other, what I find again is the explicit/implicit split. The more explicit someone is with their intent, the less likely their suggestions are to be accepted.
