There's not a lot of stuff on LW that I'm unironically a fan of, but the More Dakka post is definitely top of the list.https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/z8usYeKX7dtTWsEnk/more-dakka …

I sometimes feel like I don't fit that well into postrat Twitter very well because I went More Dakka on a bunch of stuff that they decided they had moved past instead. (It doesn't help that I'm not and have never been a rationalist per se, but eh)

Yes I could give up on theorising heavily, problem solving, and explaining experience in clear, precise, language. I understand that these all have limitations and cannot be applied in all circumstances. I understand that in many cases they work but it's very much The Hard Way.

But sometimes the reason why the tools that got you to where you are are insufficient to help you progress isn't that they're inadequate to the task, you just need to use them more and better.

You can't run everything on Technical Rationality and nor should you try, but you're probably underestimating the benefit of getting really good at it.

Wait is this a long ass post just to say “if it works do more of it until it stops working or try other things”?

it's a long ass post to say "no really keep doing it until it stops working if you haven't ridden this idea straight into the ground you probably aren't getting the best value."

everyone reads "keep doing it until it stops working" and then read it as "keep doing it until you, eh, I guess feel like stopping, or whatever, you can just get off this ride whenever man" and you can but a lot of stuff is a hill-climb beyond where most people quit

Slight tangent but one of the most useful things I learned as a result of De Bono's "Lateral Thinking" book is how much of the best stuff you come up with after you thought you've run out of ideas and kept going anyway.

I think often a properly implemented "Keep going until it stops working" doesn't stop when it's stopped working, it stops when you can't figure out a way to keep going.
