I can think of all kinds of warm, kind, femme ways I have of playing with this successfully. Thinking through other approaches. Responding to: "I'm an idiot" With "no you're not" vs "yeah you are, so am I" "I'm bad at this" -> "no, you're not" vs "for now"
I think mostly my two ways of handling it are: * Note it for later as part of my mental model of the person and say nothing * If I'm in a context where being a bit of an armchair therapist is welcome, bring it up directly and gently

Yeah, same. There's also a therapist/teacher/parent move of not responding at all, letting it sit in the air and seeing how much they needed you to respond versus they were actually stable with it. Also needs to be done with caution.
