A lot of university in a pandemic discourse seems to be academics and students shouting "how dare you say you're being exploited? *I'm* being exploited!" at each other while Old Man Capitalism sits in the corner snickering and twirling his moustache.
I don't really know who to blame for this - probably literally everyone - but yes everything about the current academic system is dysfunctional as fuck and the pandemic is only uncovering the problems that have been there all along.
It is simultaneously true that academics are working harder than ever and students aren't getting their money's worth. This is because academics were already overworked and students were already not getting their money's worth, and then the pandemic made everything worse.
This is how I felt a few years ago watching the student union take the side of the university board against university staff/faculty (and their unions). Just wanting to shake them into realizing that the rich people they’re paying money to are not their allies.
