Operating sans trust is how you cultivate trust. You consistently trust the thing/person/whatever more than is warranted, and your level of trust in it rises to the level of its trustability.
Yeah it helps to have long conversations with the farmer about each other's feelings. I dunno, a lot of the time you just have to take the final leap of faith. Some relationships are either trustworthy or not worth it and the only way to find out which is to trust.

It's not exactly a retreat. The "leap of faith" isn't exactly "I take this trust on faith", it's that "I choose to behave as if I live in a reality if it's true, because either it's true and doubting it will destroy it, or it's not true and assuming it is is the way to find out"
