I put an app limit for things like messenger kids, but that’s all 9yo has for social media really. He gets 3 hours. Devices shut off at 8 pm so he can get ready for night time and not have a screen there. Other that, I don’t limit any of it. Wanted to at first, but this

Is a reality he will be growing up. I can’t have him open up Facebook at 18 for the first time, or something like that, have no defense mechanisms. He already handles much of it better than I ever would have. The children are also quite controlled in this world, this society.

They all like to escape it, because there are teachers and parents and recording, assessments etc. No one lets them roam free as much, so they do it online. They are very liberated on there, and use it differently. Once, watched 9yo play Roblox with friends and someone joined

I had a strong feeling it’s a very creepy adult who was stalking kids on there, based on messages they were getting. Then, they all decided to keep picking him up and putting him inside of walls and furniture so he has to respawn until he lost his shit, started typing all caps.

Kids were just laughing like crazy. That’s when I decided to control it less. One big one we do talk about is Fortnite and the tricky reward mechanisms they use to keep him just engaged enough and just thirsty enough to keep going, keep wanting every new thing they put out.

I love this. Cutting it off 100% def not best approach, genie is out of the bottle, gotta learn to live with it. And that’s so cool you have chats about fortnite and the reward mechanisms. Empower them with knowledge

I'm afraid I delegate all my alt-twitter parenting opinions to @lisatomic5 who is much more qualified that me to comment.
My opinions on parenting are roughly "seems real hard, don't take advice on it from people who aren't themselves parents because we have *no* idea"

That's not always true. People who aren't parents (often? sometimes?) have experience as co-parents. The big problem is that advice-giver cost/benefit calculations differ from advice-receiver.

Yeah, that's fair. I guess I really meant "from anyone who hasn't been directly involved in raising a kid". I have a lot of fairly direct second hand kid-raising experience at this point but I still wouldn't feel confident to advise.
