Theory: Contrary to a literal reading, the harem fantasy is not about sex, but is instead a male fantasy of having more than one person you're allowed to be emotionally intimate with without having to give up a performance of masculinity that denies the need for that.

Pretty much agree, yes. The tell for me is that the fantasy often has as much if not more instances of joking, holding, wrestling, making each other tea etc. as it does sex. I think there's a weird familial (even paternal) element in there, too.

Yeah. I think it's more of a husband than a father thing but there's a very big "these are my wives and I will take care of them and they will take care of me" dynamic to it
