Ugh. Stupid Twitter. The exclamation mark is part of the URL but Twitter isn't identifying it as such. The URL is literally https:// http://fanlore.org / wiki / ! without the spaces.
But basically: Long running fannish convention. People aren't quite sure where it comes from and all the explanations seem fake.
