(This is not a criticism of the hypothetical, which is interesting, but is a position I have deliberately adopted. I wouldn't necessarily have felt this way a few years ago)

I mean this isn't just about relationships for me but that's a big part of it. My work is equally contingent on weird historical chances, including some things that were in retrospect very bad choices.
