I seem to have two modes: “healthy/functioning/high-achieving”, and “unhealthy/low-functioning/low-achieving”. High: wake up early, cook healthy foods, get exercise, low caffeine, zero alcohol, lots of productivity, low anxiety Low: all the opposite. But how do I mode switch?

(Actually, it’s more like “low mode” is just more *inconsistent* productivity; it still happens but in larger, higher-variance bursts.)

I know *how* to do the high mode, but if I’m in the low mode I never feel like I have the energy/bandwidth/willpower to do all the things necessary to switch. It’s hard to say “yes tomorrow I’ll just rise early, jog, cook breakfast and do dishes before journaling at 8!” or w/e

And if I’m in low mode, just one jog/homecooked meal/good nights’ sleep isn’t enough to switch back. This feels similar to some other class of problems where many things are all inter-dependent and progress requires small adjustments to many things at once.

Anyway, anyone have similar “modes”, good ways of thinking about them, ways to make the high mode more sustainable, or any advice for switching back into the healthier one?

Zero sleep sends me into a bit of high / faux-manic state the next day so I get the mood boost but definitely not productivity

This is why the gods gave us modafinil. (This is probably a terrible plan but I'm kinda tempted to try it now)

As a side note I *don't* typically find modafinil is good for getting me out of these states. It tends to result in functioning despite them, which I find moderately unpleasant.
