Thinking about how weird it is that we diagnose people with mental conditions outside of their social context today.
Like we say someone “has” PTSD or Anorexia or addiction and maybe look at their environment for triggers or influences, but we don’t see them as part of it.

What I mean by this is that almost no one exists outside of a network of relationships and beliefs and responsibilities that shape their frame of reference and engagement with the world. You can’t NOT be part of a larger whole.

But when we diagnose or treat someone with either therapy or medication, it’s intensely individual even if those things are considered. I’m not sure this is necessarily the right way to think about mental illness, which primarily impacts people socially...
