You know how some people are *really* into being geeks and proudly declare they're geeks and are super into things specifically because they're geeky and it's just incredibly cringe, especially if you're also a geek? I feel like a lot of identity labels work like this.

yes. im trying to pinpoint the cringe exactly and maybe it's bc outspoken geeks play up a "proud to be weird even tho society hates weirdos !!" narrative when, truly, their interests are so mundane

sorry, but being obsessed with harry potter just like a million other depressed childless millennials does not make you weird the real weirdos are the ones watching like idek primer for the 55th time or like aspies cataloging every species of beetle in a 50 mile radius

Yeah this is definitely a big part of it. It feels like their level of being into the identity is totally disproportionate to their level of actually exhibiting it. Like they're generally not *not* geeks, but they're not particularly strongly so.

A thing I have in my head for this (and this is flagrantly generalised from one example) is that they probably like Big Bang Theory, and I feel like anyone who can watch that without feeling personally attacked and not in a fun way probably needs to reconsider how geeky they are.
