Yeah this is definitely a big part of it. It feels like their level of being into the identity is totally disproportionate to their level of actually exhibiting it. Like they're generally not *not* geeks, but they're not particularly strongly so.
A thing I have in my head for this (and this is flagrantly generalised from one example) is that they probably like Big Bang Theory, and I feel like anyone who can watch that without feeling personally attacked and not in a fun way probably needs to reconsider how geeky they are.
