I don't think identity labels are bad BTW. Identity labels serve a lot of useful social functions which are hard to replace. It's just that taking them too seriously seems to be a very cringe failure mode.

I'm a little worried I've reinvented the "Fake Geek Girl" concept as most of the examples I can think of doing this are women. There are guys who are clearly a bit too into being geeks, but their identity isn't challenged so they don't need to perform it.https://twitter.com/GeniesLoki/status/1305033957713612800 …

I think
@Tipsycaek has convinced me that the "mostly female examples" thing is idiosyncratic to my social circle and this is totally a thing guys do too.https://twitter.com/Tipsycaek/status/1305043973946314755 …Show this thread

Hmm. Do you have any people in your life who would wear a T-shirt saying "Geek!" or who would say things like "This is so geeky, I love it!!" about something? Possibly prone to filling their home with Star Wars and Harry Potter memorabilia?

I cringe from everything I like atm, from every identity I wish to belong to me. I think it's either 1. because I don't qualify for these identities yet, or 2. because I value them so much that I think everyone wants to have these identities, and I'm rude to claim them.

Why can't you just like what you like and do what feels right/good ? :( Do you feel you need to identify with a group ? Are you seeking the approval of specific people ? :/
