It's called nonviolent communication mostly because they really want to emphasise that you're not supposed to punch them when they explain how it works.

I think Rosenberg significantly underestimates how much of the success of his method in his anecdotes is as a result of freaking people out enough that they don't want to interact with him any further and/or confusing them into submission.
