Alright, I'll confess: some of what I am allergic to in the space of "actions that if you just Do will give you Insight in Indescribable ways" are that they posit a hidden but crucially important world in which I am a total unknowing neophyte and that's an unpleasant thought.

Isn't it nice to know there's a whole unknown out there, waiting for you? An edge to push.

For sure, but there are dozens of these unknowns, and so I still have to choose where to invest, and I find myself uninterested in investing in anything that's not willing to tell me what they're about in a way I'll understand.

The "low-cost experiment" is a good frame here, but many of them *aren't* low cost (I'll admit here that I'm subtweeting Kensho in particular), and even if they are, there are many of them.https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/tMhEv28KJYWsu6Wdo/kensh …

One reason meditation is easy enough to buy into is that even if there weren't descriptions of the process that made sense even before you were enlightened, there are studies and other descriptions of what it does for people that make it reasonable to assess its value to you.

I just don't want to imagine myself inhabiting a world in which I am constantly being found wanting for every type of enlightenment I haven't managed to reach. It doesn't make me better, it makes me defensive or annoyed at the undeserved audacity.

The fact that you are not god is not a sign of being wanting, it's just a wealth of opportunities to become more godlike.

That kind of framing *is* really helpful for the emotional experience of the first tweet, I appreciate it.
At the same time, there's also a substantive annoyance!

I mean it annoys me that I'm not god too, but I figure if I keep plugging away at it I'll either become god or have a good time failing to do so.

Haha, I *meant* annoyance at people who aren't doing any work to help me distinguish their claims from bullshit.

Well the problem is generally that they don't know how to distinguish their claims from bullshit either
