I'm generally of the opinion that honesty and mutual cooperation with people are the path to a better future for everyone, but it must be noted that for this purpose neither your boss nor your landlord counts as a person.

That's how they get you. (Your manager isn't necessarily who I mean by "your boss" though - a manager-report relationship is less intrinsically adversarial)

Aren't almost all bosses managers? (Few people report to the actual business owner)

It depends a lot on context and business structure. For me the person most likely to be labelled the boss has historically been the CEO. Sometimes it's the department head. Sometimes it's the manager.

There's always some sort of power imbalance between you and the manager but it's often not as extreme as it could be.

Like a policy of complete transparency with your direct manager is probably still a bad idea, but they're much closer to being an equal party.

I think generally in large corporations communication with your non-direct boss is actively discouraged and a bit of a faux pas, as it means going over the head of your direct boss.
