I'm generally of the opinion that honesty and mutual cooperation with people are the path to a better future for everyone, but it must be noted that for this purpose neither your boss nor your landlord counts as a person.

Like a policy of complete transparency with your direct manager is probably still a bad idea, but they're much closer to being an equal party.

I think generally in large corporations communication with your non-direct boss is actively discouraged and a bit of a faux pas, as it means going over the head of your direct boss.
