Dehumanisation is bad. Outside their professional contexts, bosses and landlords are in fact people. It's possible that some of them could be your friends in other circumstances. But if you cosplay as a soul-sucking eldritch horror, you're going to get treated like one.

Your relationship with these people is founded on the fact that they will ruthlessly exploit you given the slightest opportunity to do so, and you should behave accordingly.

my landlord and manager are both lovely -
That's how they get you. (Your manager isn't necessarily who I mean by "your boss" though - a manager-report relationship is less intrinsically adversarial)

I've dealt with both spectrums; I've had landlords be complete assholes and my most recent landlord for my business has been understanding during this year's lockdowns. His relaxing attitude gave me a stress-free environment to focus.

This tweet makes me sad because a) of course there are plenty of good landlords and bosses, and b) this sort of thing is self-reinforcing. If you tell a group they're greedy and uncooperative, they get selected/persuaded towards that. Same as "shareholder value maximization".

(a) Doesn't matter. The degree of power they have over you and the incentives working against them being on your side is sufficiently high that even if they're good you can't afford to treat them as such. (b) This sort of thing self-sustains fine without any reinforcement.

This makes more sense to me to read it as "be as honest and cooperative as you can afford to be."
