I have a frustrating pet theory here: It actually is, but the men with whom this would work are often having significant social anxiety about approaching women because they're overthinking "How do I do this without coming off as hitting on them?" and similar.

Yeah, if nothing else they have an analogue of what we were talking about with the queer thing: it's a point of commonality with the other women at the conference that can be used to start a friendship. (assuming a conference in a male dominated field)
