Part of my evidence for this theory is that I find it much easier to make friends with women at conferences than I do with men. (This is only weak evidence because I have underlying issues with men that make it harder for me to make friends with them in general, but still)
I have a frustrating pet theory here: It actually is, but the men with whom this would work are often having significant social anxiety about approaching women because they're overthinking "How do I do this without coming off as hitting on them?" and similar.
