Everyone is wrong about mansplaining and it's very annoying. Mansplaining is a failure to negotiate a common conversation protocol, resulting in an annoying mismatch. This can be due to sexism but it isn't necessarily so.

I accept that in many circumstances I have to do it anyway, but the conversation would go so much better if I could just assume that both parties respect the other's expertise and are prepared to assert their own where relevant. It's a very effective communication protocol.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I do, but that solves the use case of (1) but not (2).

Can't you just say "stop me if I'm wrong" or "so it's basically like..." or "so what you're saying is..." at the beginning of your monologue? I love monologuing and that's what I do. I can see it being a change but I don't think it makes things that much longer?

I 100% agree it's good to set out a shared understanding early in a conversation and I think I bring a real mansplaining energy to some of my convos but I hope it's in a useful way because I try to transition in and out? Might have to ask for feedback...
