I don’t understand the trend of male-identifying people using obviously not-them female avatars of either IRL women or “this person does not exist” style faces. Is this commentary about the internet? An anxious hedge against mobs? They just like simps? What’s the logic?

I would imagine more engagement and less hostility / competitiveness. It also provides a personal feeling to the account without exposing your real face. It's surprisingly easy to spot those accounts just by "that sounds like something a guy would say"

It is a weird trend! Would love to see results from a couple groups of people swapping the gender of their profile pic and nothing else, and just reporting if anything was different

When I polled about how people saw the change they mostly pointed out that the different emotional energy of the picture was more significant. Not sure how the gender of it affects how people treat me. I think most people assume I'm a guy anyway.

The goal between the slightly obfuscated gender of this account was always that I think people (at least people whose opinions I care about) are more likely to give time to some of my takes rather than jump to the worst interpretation if I'm not obviously a guy

Doesn't sound like a great situation to be in when the people whose opinion you care about are liable to be at your throat immediately just because they read you as male.

Oh, right, no it's not. I guess what I really mean is "People whose opinion I care about in principle". People sort themselves into "not worth my time" or "worth my time" pretty quickly and the former aren't a problem, but this makes strangers a little more likely to be friendly.

e.g. I talk about negative issues affecting men. I'm doing this fairly explicitly from a "Actually things kinda suck for everyone, but here are some male-specific issues you might not have thought of" perspective, and it helps to not have people pattern match me to an MRA.

Like generally if after we've had a proper conversation about this stuff someone would still think worse of me if they knew I was male, they're obviously not worth my time, but the ambiguity helps increase the chances of having that conversation first.
