I don’t understand the trend of male-identifying people using obviously not-them female avatars of either IRL women or “this person does not exist” style faces. Is this commentary about the internet? An anxious hedge against mobs? They just like simps? What’s the logic?

Doesn't sound like a great situation to be in when the people whose opinion you care about are liable to be at your throat immediately just because they read you as male.

Oh, right, no it's not. I guess what I really mean is "People whose opinion I care about in principle". People sort themselves into "not worth my time" or "worth my time" pretty quickly and the former aren't a problem, but this makes strangers a little more likely to be friendly.
