i mean this is not an either/or thing but very much a both/and thing individual therapy helped me A LOT but also i had/have incredible, mutually healing friendships

Yeah I'm not against individual therapy (though I think it fails much more often than it succeeds), I just think it's too dominant as a default mode.

i've always had a strong aversion from group therapy but mostly because that's with strangers. with friends, that's different, though again in that case i prefer the informal approach.

I have a bunch of semi-formal group therapy like arrangements with friends and it works pretty well, but therapy skills are prevalent in my friend group so that helps.

that's pretty great! i've developed some therapy skills over the years (~7 years of therapy does that to you) and they do come useful.

Me too but I mostly skipped the 7 years of therapy and just read a bunch of books and talked to a lot of people. (I've done some therapy but my conclusion was that the therapist was not a great match for me and that I was better equipped to solve my problems than she was)

i've done the books, i've had my self-help phase for a few years, and they are useful but for me therapy was far more valueable and yeah finding a good match with your therapist is extremely important. it's kind of like dating.

on whether therapy helps at the individual level at all - I think it's much more useful to have a whole bunch of therapy skills in the water in a community than therapy is for individuals themselves.
