the difference between most academic papers and most lesswrong posts (which are often pretty technical/intellectually sophisticated) isn’t even funny academics are leaving a lot of money on the table wrt presenting and organizing knowledge

No they're not! There's rarely much money to be had from presenting and organising knowledge - it's a winner takes all game, and it's high enough effort to play and sufficiently socially discouraged that it significantly harms their ability to participate in academic status games

There are plenty of valid criticisms against academics and academia for being as hard to understand as they are, and I hate it, but it's rational incentive following behaviour.
