It is after all an environment well suited to high verbal intelligence, the only component of IQ on which women consistently outperform men on average. (OK, I'm just being a jerk at this point, I don't actually think this is really the explanation)

Speculatively: masculinity has always been kinda dysfunctional but in ways that you could sortof paper over in the 20th century, but when the internet and future shock hit, having a prior body of feminist activism and literature helped women deal with it and adapt better.
