I think the 'repatriation trauma' a lot of third culture kids describe is losing fargroup privilege: being an obvious expat means expansive social freedom in at least the top half of these, which you lose when you repatriate and find tip of the 'berg norms suddenly being enforcedpic.twitter.com/otX9XTtMle

Most people assume that a kid moving to a far-flung place will find it hard going out while coming home will be a doddle, but most of my cohort found the opposite and there was no in-out-fargroup typology to describe and explain what people were experiencing

Lots of kids say their host country was more socially tolerant than their home country, instead of registering that they went from ignored fargroup ('lack of rules', 'laid back') to policed ingroup when they repatriatedpic.twitter.com/EqlbtQGctc

I don't think this model tracks my experience, which was that if you join your "native" country at age 10 you are absolutely not ingroup and the other kids will be fucking savage in making sure you know that.

I think you're near the border of the ingroup there, certainly close enough in to get the savagery rather than be ignored? We might be using these terms differently

No, I don't think so. The reception is very much like that of foreigners joining schools at that age. Coming in to an established school group as someone who doesn't fit is very much a way to be made one of the official acceptable, and it does not feel at all like being ingroup.

I mean this is all somewhat exacerbated by the fact that I was a majorly socially awkward kid in general, but the difference in how I was treated by other kids when moving from abroad to "home" was a *really* sharp and very unpleasant transition.

Note that I wouldn't have been fargroup to the equivalent kids in the third culture either, because those would all have been fellow western immigrants. It's true that I was fargroup to the broader culture, but I wasn't interacting with them at all.
