AFAICT the whole point of the enlightenment/jesus story is to eliminate precisely this sort of accounting so we can just focus on being kind to one another It's the old testament that makes retribution across generations
I think these concepts do point to useful informative features of the world that are worth considering. I don't think they imply a need for retribution, but they do need to be considered when e.g. considering help we should provide people, or allowances we should make.
