Imagine being able to remember enough to answer questions about your childhood, couldn't be me.

I can’t just call stuff up. I have to encounter something that reminds me of a specific event otherwise a lot is blank/fuzzy

You might find giving the exercise a go interesting - I would have said the same but there was a lot more there than I expected there to be. (Depending on how your childhood was you might also find the exercise intensely unpleasant. Use personal judgement)

Yeah... based on what I keep remembering lately it’s a lot of unpleasantness. I learned recently that a lot of my growing up experiences were not normal and I’m still grappling with that

Me recently: "Ah yes, that that time I was evacuated from a war zone, leaving my father behind, that very normal childhood event. I suppose that *was* stressful now that you mention it." (It's less dramatic than it sounds and my father is fine, but it wasn't *not* dramatic)

I think it's very hard to know how "normal" our childhood experiences were and what sort of impact they had, and most people don't really compare notes so it's easy to miss.

Like, I know I was in a bit of a bubble being a racially diverse conservative Christian setting, but sometimes I have memories that I try to compare with friends raised *similarly* and they still look at me like “Whhhyy???” For ex:https://twitter.com/mustashton/status/1296261497555947520?s=21 …

Like I don't have any experience of racially diverse conservative Christian settings, so I can't comment on "normal", but there's a lot to unpack in that anecdote.

But yeah. I have a memory like that pop up almost every week. I’m unsure I want to try to force more out with free writing

Yes I can see why this might be something you'd want to avoid!

But it still seems like a cool exercise. I might try it when I’ve had consistent access to therapy for a while. I know there’s some pleasantness getting buried in the ugly, so I’d like to access that again eventually
