Meh. People are polyaffectionate. Sex is special from a cultural point of view, but the number of monogamists I know whose pair bond is stressed by their partners’ fishing buddies or schoolgirl friendships … is quite large.

There is a reason the evil mother-in-law is a trope, and it comes down to “sharing is hard and people don’t negotiate boundaries well”.

Tell me MiLs aren't that bad after you've had one decide to move in with you for 6 months because the two of you were expecting her first grandchild.

Not to repeat myself, but “people don’t negotiate boundaries well” seems to be an operative principle here.

My point is exactly that negotiation takes both sides talking in good faith. If one side will consistently ignore your right to set boundaries in your own home or with your own son, what exactly can you do apart from cut them off?

I don’t disagree with you that negotiation takes both sides talking in good faith, and in the situation as presented it seems to me that the other party is terrible at negotiating.

Actually the other party seems pretty great at negotiating to me, they sound like they just have bad goals and know they can get away with these tactics.

Still disagree. They’re good at getting what they want; that’s not equivalent to being good at negotiation. Good negotiators get what both parties want.
