Tell me MiLs aren't that bad after you've had one decide to move in with you for 6 months because the two of you were expecting her first grandchild.
I don't think @joXn was suggesting that they weren't that bad so much as positing a reason for their badness?
(Also so far 100% of my interactions with partners' mothers have been somewhere between moderately negative and apocalyptic, but not for reasons that generalise well)

I mean I expect many/most mother in laws are fine, but it's certainly a commonly strained relationship. As far as I can tell my sibling's spouse has a perfectly good relationship with my mother, as do my partners.

I wasn’t intending to suggest that MILs are bad in general or good in general; just that the parent/child in-law relationship is commonly strained and the common cultural trope describing that strained relationship is the “evil mother-in-law”.

But I think the flaw is in the word "negotiate". We repeatedly set boundaries that were ignored. My MiL is unwilling to accept that anyone has the authority to overrule her in her self-awarded role of family matriarch. The only way to stop her is basically to cut all contact.
