I feel like people theorising the link between kinks and trauma often miss the point. You don't need complex theories to explain why someone is into a particular kink - it's just fun. What you need to explain is why people are stuck in a particular range of fun things.
But also I think the rage leading up to that point kinda heightens the experience and lends an intensity to it that it would otherwise lack.

To me that sounds like how relief relates to fear - a nice feeling because it's a 'release' of an unpleasant one. So gloating is fun because of anger. But the original point is that it's normal to find negative feelings fun outside of kink, and I'm not sure that's the case

I feel like the prevalence of violent video games is another data point in favour of it being normal to enjoy the anger itself in game play. I agree that release is an enjoyable aspect of it, but I think games switch between anger and release enough to be hard to separate.
