I feel like people theorising the link between kinks and trauma often miss the point. You don't need complex theories to explain why someone is into a particular kink - it's just fun. What you need to explain is why people are stuck in a particular range of fun things.

It’s fascinating that this isn’t landing for some people who’d otherwise be entirely onboard with meditation, therapy, or other activities that subvert the conditioned expectations that we have. I haven’t done any kink, but can really see how any given act would be mind-expanding

Although now that I say this it definitely seems like I’m a bit more on the “working through trauma” therapeutic-ish end rather than the “just fun” end.

I think it's like drugs - you can do it to expand your mind, or you can do it to have fun, and both are perfectly valid experiences.
