A thing I've never quite figured out how to navigate is what to do when the frame that works best for you personally is... politically difficult, because it is not the same as a frame that other people who are like you are asserting as The One Truth as part of demanding rights.

Examples for me include gender stuff, ADHD. I maintain that I am cis and do not have ADHD but that other people who have exactly my level of cisness and intrinsic-ADHDness are very welcome to self-describe otherwise and that both views are useful.

Unfortunately because the frame that people have adopted in order to get the rights and treatment they need is one which treats these things as intrinsic objective true immutable aspects of your identity, that can be tricky to navigate.

This frustrates me. I would say that even if being gay / ... were a choice it should make no difference to how people are treated. If not then bisexuals definitely don't need protecting if they choose to date the same sex.

People should be allowed to live their lives on their own terms as long as it doesn't hurt others, and society should be kind and understanding.

Am I being a utopian for wanting people to just love and help each other without insisting on dissecting each other's identities?

The same applies to gate keeping. E.g. in the UK the hoops you have to jump through if you're trans and want hormones seem incredible. You have to prove you're a "true" trans person and not some other label they might stick on you. Why?

The drugs are not incredibly expensive, I don't think, so it's not a matter of rationing limited resources. I can understand a waiting period to make sure people are sure, but apart from that people should be free to understand their own selves in the way that makes sense to them

Mental health (leaving aside the management of violent / dangerous people) should be about helping people solve issues they identify in collaboration with them and supporting them, not making them fit into externally imposed boxes.

Naturally, I entirely agree with all of this.
