(Furthermore, it isn't as if we gained nothing from our time under more vitriolic belief systems, we learned a number of ways to expose the flaws in a lot of simple and semi-mantric arguments, and learnt to hold trust and skepticism in both hands when given new knowledge.)
I think even with pretty bad views it's often worth trying to do synthesis, because you can look to the underlying pain they're rooted in and problems they're talking about without endorsing the solutions they want. Not always, mind, some views are just bad, but often.
