i loathe people who come to understand the shortcomings of their views and just abandon them wholesale then uncritically adopt a new one and promptly begin to mock the people who believe the same thing they just believed five minutes ago, they're pathetic

Strong endorse. I think pretty much every view I've "given up" I still like agree with them on 80% of things other than specific tactics, I've just gone "Wait, shit, this is complicated" and taken on beliefs that they'd disagree with too.

Not at all sure how, but it seems like we (society as abstract) should be encouraging finding synthesis in constructing new views more often.
Not always, I don't miss our outright misogynistic days. But synthesis is still an immensely valuable idea. -
(Furthermore, it isn't as if we gained nothing from our time under more vitriolic belief systems, we learned a number of ways to expose the flaws in a lot of simple and semi-mantric arguments, and learnt to hold trust and skepticism in both hands when given new knowledge.)

exactly! i have given up lots of goals too but they were all because the "shit it's complicated" realization included some form of understanding that certain goals /require/ bad things (state health care for example)
