i mean yes lol but part of what i had to do was (temporarily) step out of the frame in which there were “problems” that needed “solving”

Let's say you have a cruel inner critic that constantly says "you're not good enough". Yes, problem solving skills will help you "become better" more effectively. But you'll never be good enough for your cruel inner critic.

Now, you might say "you're solving the wrong problem". But from within, it doesn't feel like "I have a cruel inner critic". It feels like "I'm still not good enough; I just need to become EVEN BETTER".

A cruel inner critic doesn't feel like "a problem to solve". It feels like you. It IS you. It's the same you that's deciding what problems "you" "should" solve in the first place.

I'm not Qiaochu and I can't speak for him. But my interpretation is: - Giving better problem solving skills to your cruel inner critic can be net negative - To see and engage with it, it's necessary to step out of the "problem solving" mindset altogether

I don't think this is true and in fact I think having a cruel inner critic is one of the canonical examples of things people treat as immutable facts of life rather than problems to be solved.

By the time you're at "aw darn, I have a cruel inner critic", you're in a good place, and ready to apply problem solving My concern is when you're at "what, cruel inner critic? nonsense! I'm just not good enough" I think it's VERY hard to overcome or even notice that blind spot

That's probably true, yeah. I still think getting better at problem solving skills is a net good for most people, but agree that for some people if you don't get good at the right subskills in the right order there are going to be periods where it sucks (and you can get stuck in)

My considered opinion in general is basically that for almost everyone the correct decision tree is "Do I have negative self-talk? Yes -> DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO FIX THIS. No -> Cool do something else then." and most problem solving skills work is probably in the no branch.
