Making feel guilty and awkward around earning money is such a great tool of social control. I've kinda got to begrudgingly respect whatever asshole came up with it.

The reality of course is that no one person came up with it and this sort of thing is just what it looks like when you have a system where problems that matter to the powerful get fixed and problems that don't don't, plus individual assholes with power doing their thing locally.

Mistrusting greedy period is a sensible heuristic, as is trying to avoid appearing greedy. Most people will still take money when it's available.
