Not even like, romantically terrifying, I just had a lot of bad experiences with own-gender peers as a kid and so it's harder for me to consider them safe.

Yeah I've heard similar sentiments from both men and women. I think it's just an intrinsic artefact of gendered ways of relating rather than one of men or women being more terrifying than the other.

(I'm unsure how this plays out if you're non-binary though I'd low key guess that nonbinary people will tend to experience this with whatever gender they were assigned at birth because it's mostly about things learned through childhood experiences)
