postrats are basically just rationalists who decided that the rational thing to do was to get therapy but then because they were rationalists decided they were much smarter than all the therapists and they should do it themselves instead.

Why is everybody discussing what postrats are and not what postrationality *is*? I tought postrats are people who think that rationality is a nice tool for a lot of things, but accept that it's not perfect and think that we need other tools, for example for *meaning*, as well.

Now it's all about memes and ingroup jokes. I mean I'm fine with this, but I liked the discussion about kegan and the utility of rituals.

I think the question "what is postrationality?" presumes more there than is actually there and the memes and ingroup jokes are actually defining features of what a postrat is to a much greater degree than any underlying philosophical claims.

The memes and ingroup jokes say a lot about postrat, this is true for every idea and ideology which is discussed on the internet. I just rarely see people who discuss postrat ideas in a serious way, but maybe this is big part of postrat itself, not taking things seriously.

My point is that the fact that postrationalists exist does not mean that there is a coherent set of things you could reasonably call "postrationalist ideas" any more than the rationalists can be understood separately from their very specific origins in Less Wrong.

I knew that the qualia of rationalism for me is big yud, but I tought there is more to rationalism than less wrong. I also tought that postrats have a common set of ideas. I mean disagreement with "rationality is the best / only tool to solve problems" is a coherent idea?

I think there are a couple of things worth teasing apart: rationalism: catch all term, means about 10 different only vaguely related things with no common lineage rationalists: specific group of people with a lineage rooted in LW, though no longer centered there (cont)

"rationalists are wrong about basically everything" - default position shared by most of the world "The rationalists have something interesting to say but I've kinda moved past that" - the postrationalist position.

To the degree that there is a coherent set of postrationalist ideas, it is the set of ideas roughly shared in common knowledge among people who would describe themselves as postrationalist.

The rationalists are not a philosophy first movement - they start from a specific set of people and a context, which is prior to the philosophy - and in defining themselves with regard to the rationalists neither can be the post-rationalists.
