I think it's not so much about assigned purpose (I admit my use of "telos" was a bit misleading in that it mostly does mean that) as range of fit. Things lack an intrinsic purpose, but their nature strongly biases the set of purposes to which they can be applied.
For sure. People can, do, and should, change, often in profound ways. But also people end up in denial about aspects of themselves that they'd be better off embracing because they're never going away, or at least not going away before you eat your shadow by embracing them.
