I understand that in context the person was saying "I want my side to win and I don't think the other side should be allowed to win" but that's not *better*.

I'm not that draconian! People are allowed to speak in private, and maybe to post comments about how cute this picture of a cat is in public. Just not, like, actual opinions about things that have consequences until they've been validated as safe to do so.

I'm generally pretty pro-democracy but people's opinions about democracy reliably make me question that when I remember that they're allowed to vote.

I can see this in future once society matures substantially. Imagine trying to find democratic consensus on what it might look like now, to establish some common purpose for society that people agree to contribute to!
