The special brilliance of the MCU wasn’t just tying and known characters and movies together. It remade the image of a platoon of superheroes that barely had any mindshare. Thor? Guardians? Captain America? They seem inescapable now but we all rolled our eyes initially.

The idea that any leading man could play iron man today with the culture cache the character has now is only a hypothesis. The MCU hasn’t proved that kind of resiliency quite yet.

Maybe this is all just a bit of Hollywood’s anxiety, flailing about to blame anything and finally realizing they are losing grip on mainstream culture. Which if that’s the case,,, https://twitter.com/thesundaytimes/status/1421733105858187264 …pic.twitter.com/tJow2TF4vO

The MCU wouldn't have taken off if RDJ didn't perfectly balance charm, irritation, and pathos, and you can tell because Disney immediately sanded all of it off when they bought the property.

Agreed - even if I did not always agree with the way they handled his character development in the MCU.

Also, why is Matt Damon sounding as brainless as Scorsese these days about cinema's future.

This "last of the leading men" sounds like code for white men lamenting not being 100% in control of the world.

His performance in the first one made the MCU what it is today. If it didn't do as well as it did, it's very likely they wouldn't have pursued the comic book movie relaunch with as much funding so quickly. RDJ deserves a great deal of credit for it all.

iron man came out in 2008 - the movies has changed immensely in those 13 years. i think it is safe to assume that if they brought back a new actor to play iron man it would be highly successful in current movie culture in a way it wouldn’t have back then
