Lenka talks the potential for hydrogen production with nuclear about how nuscale has been engaging with communities and stakeholders, and that local governments want their new plants to be part of their communities.pic.twitter.com/r0T4f4hnpd
Rachel & Lenka: The nuclear community is concerned about what a just transition could look like for coal communities-- it would be a pretty smooth transition if it went from coal to nuclear (as the powerplant jobs are similar). Not much retraining needed.
Rachel: the community is now hyperfocused on building "reactors that people want to buy". Reactors that are similar to gas plants in terms of construction time, staff needed, and cost.
Lenka: on time on budget is something we're incredibly focused on. Factory construction enables this and makes the price more predictable.
Liz: it can be hard to get capital. Some of funders would write checks personally instead of through their VCs. It's changing now as sector gets more acceptance.
Rachel: China and Russia's massive investments in nuclear have created an uneven playing field. Nuclear innovation can fix it.
Lenka: many countries that don't have nuclear want it and are working with the IAEA to get it. World Bank funds fossil builds but not nuclear. That needs to change.
Kirsty: Lack of international regulatory standards add cost and risk, and act as a major barrier to the investor case.
What a stellar panel in all ways imaginable. With such representatives for the future nuclear business, I feel blessed.
