I believe Lindbergh flew the P-38 with Bong and McGuire and showed them how to extend the range, more than doubling it.
Q fr @AUtitude : if you were allowed to option... would you have chosen the P-38 to fly in Europe instead of the P-51? A: Why would one do that? US could have chosen that but the war turned around w/ the P-51 & Gen Doolittle's strategy. #WWII, @usairforce @USArmy

Always thought the increased rotational inertia of the P-38 made it less desirable for dogfighting than the quicker-banking P-51. As you say, “the right plane for the mission.”

P-38 was a great a it airplane but P-47 and P-51 were the right planes for Europe.

P-38 Superchargers had problems in Europe, bad habit of exploding. Whether due to colder air or earlier design not sure. Performed well elsewhere.

The article says he came up with a way to extend the range,.. true but not anywhere near double. And that was just a takeoff procedure modification.
