Ejection seat’s didn’t come until well into the Jet Age. I remember seeing the instructions to a pilot flying a British Spitfire: “on takeoff, keep the canopy open until well off the ground in case you have to scramble out in a hurry.”

I would say that Chuck knew the book very well, but also understood systems in P-51 better than the author of that book.. Tactically, Chuck said, "Rules are for those who can't or won't invent their own." My favorite part of that quote is that Chuck does follow the rules
