What was the L/D on the X-1 General Yeager? The gliders we fly now have anything from 40:1 to 60:1 - pretty sure you couldn’t thermal the X-1!

The NF-104A crash was depicted. He ejected from that one after being in a flat spin for tens of thousands of feet. It was a different airplane and he was hurt much more in real life than in the movie.
