Q: Which aircraft gave the greatest sense of acceleration of all the types you've flown. A: Probably X-1. Funny story: 2005 Edwards AFB air show. Brass wanted to show off F-22 to P-51 fr slow flight & acceleration. but in P-51 I took off in front of crowd - F-22 lagged. Heh heh

Nope, they really feared the Hawker Tempest because it was so fast at low level, perhaps faster than the 262 below 10,000 ft.
